Transport for London (TFL) flagship Kingston Cromwell Road Bus Station underwent a transformational redevelopment.
Completed in November 2024 and delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick in partnership with the Royal Borough of Kingston, the project utilised advanced prefabricated building methods and sustainable materials from SIPs Eco Panels to create an energy-efficient, accessible and visually striking public transport hub.
This case study explores how Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) from SIPs Eco Panels played a vital role in modernising the station, reducing its environmental footprint, and demonstrating best practices in low-carbon construction
Client: Transport for London (TFL)
Panel Supplier & Installer: SIPs Eco Panels
Contractor: VolkerFitzpatrick
Duration: 14 months (closure began August 2023, completed November 2024)
Annual Users: 8 million passengers
Location: Kingston upon Thames, London
First opened in 1995, the station was dated, congested, and lacking in environmental and accessibility credentials. The redevelopment addressed these challenges with a forward-thinking design and green construction methods.
VolkerFitzpatrick demolished the outdated 1990s structure and constructed new public facilities including:

SIPs Eco Panels were selected to deliver high-performance, low-carbon building envelopes that could be installed rapidly with minimal disruption to the public realm. Their precision-manufactures, airtight panels aligned with TFL’s sustainability goals and enabled off-site fabrication that reduced on-site waste and carbon emissions.
The Kingston Bus Station project incorporated a range of green features:
Together, these elements establish the site as a model for sustainable, energy-efficient public infrastructure.

SIPs Eco Panels provided and installed their innovative SIPs Eco Panel System for the station buildings. Key performance characteristics included:
“With improved safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency, the redevelopment has been a great project for the team at SIPs Eco to work on.”
— Matt Banks, Director, SIPs Eco Panels

The Kingston Cromwell Road Bus Station redevelopment exemplifies how SIPS Eco Panels can be applied in public infrastructure to create energy-efficient, sustainable, and user-friendly buildings. By combining fast, precise SIP construction with environmental features—solar arrays, green roofing, permeable drainage—the project significantly elevated the standard for eco-conscious transport hubs.
This case sets a benchmark for similar developments across the UK, demonstrating that SIPsEcoPanels delivers high thermal performance, rapid installation, minimal waste, and positive community impact. As cities and public bodies increasingly pursue net‑zero and sustainable building standards, this retrofit offers a compelling model: SIPs Eco Panels powering modern, green, accessible architecture for the public realm.
