Unique Challenge: Building in a flood zone with complex, multi-level design
Our client’s project was the demolition of an existing extension and the erection of a new SIPs extension. The complication was that the build had to include substantial flood protection works due to its location close to a river.
Sips Eco Panels were contracted to provide Building Regulation drawings and supply and fit upgraded 194mm Sips Eco Panels for the walls and roof. By rendering the external skin off of battens fixed to the 194mm SIP wall panels, our client achieved a u-value of 0.14 W/m2K to his extension walls.
The extension included a multi-level Sitting Room, Conservatory, Kitchen, Porch, and Utility, all designed to harmonise with the existing building and new foundation levels. Due to the site’s uneven ground levels and the introduction of a new flood defence wall, the design had to accommodate several different floor heights – adding both complexity and the need for precision.
SIPs were chosen not only for their structural strength but also for their rapid on-site assembly, which was critical given the unpredictable weather conditions and limited access.
The build was executed in tandem with the construction of new flood defences. This required close coordination between our design office, the groundworks team, and the SIPs erection crew. The SIPs system allowed for swift erection without compromising on performance, even in the face of challenging winter weather.
Our team’s attention to detail and adaptability helped ensure that the structure met all performance, timing, and flood resilience requirements.
