What are SIPs Panels?

A typical SIPs eco build house can be erected within 5 - 7 days, with zero disruption due to weather

What are SIPs?

SIPs, or Structural Insulated Panels, are a newer, more innovative method of construction, for superior, high-performance builds.  Using SIPs panels, a typical house can be erected in just 5 – 7 days.

Providing many other benefits over traditional build methods, the very nature of SIPs building panels means they’re exceptionally strong, whilst also being very lightweight – mainly comprising of insulation.

SIP panels are prefabricated off site, and consist of an insulating expanded polystyrene (EPS)  foam core sandwiched between two structural facings – typically structural grade OSB.

The OSB3 panel has a cover width of 1200mm with standard lengths of 2400, 2700, and 5100mm.

EPS insulation does not deteriorate over time, which may be the case with other forms of insulation.  EPS is 100% recyclable and has zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) and GWP (Global Warming potential).

What are the main benefits of SIPs panels?

Here we’ve listed some of the main advantages when using our high-performance SIPs polystyrene panels for your project:

  • Up to 3x faster than traditional methods - erect a typical house within a week ● Reduced U-Values as low as 0.10 W/m2K - leading to increased space with a thinner wall
  • 90% less wastage on site (as our panels are manufactured off-site)
  • Zero reliance on weather conditions - for minimal disruption to the critical path
  • Lightweight - ideal for sites in city centres with access restrictions
  • Easier installation - with reduced drilling and crane use on site
  • Huge savings on labour - with reduced number of trades and supervision on site
  • 60% less timber than traditional build methods
  • Increased usable roof space - fully-insulated roofs without trusses
  • Build up to 4 storeys with SIPs (or five with blockwork or steel first storey)
  • 7x stronger than timber frame - and 3x stronger than brick and block
  • Excellent insulation values for increased resale value
  • Airtight, with reduced cold bridging
  • Lower annual energy costs
  • Does not degrade or deteriorate over time
  • Naturally more eco-friendly than other build types

Build with Sips – how are SIPs used in construction?

Because they’re very versatile, SIPs building panels can be used with an external cladding, be it brick, render, weatherboarding, metal, traditional brick course or any outer skin.  They work equally well when roofed with slates, tiles, metallic or living green roof system.

Internally, SIPs panels can be finished with plasterboard and a skim coating (with service cavities where needed) meaning the wet trades are kept to a minimum, and speeding up build times even faster.

SIPs are:

  • Non-toxic
  • Low carbon footprint
  • Made with 100% recyclable EPS
  • Energy Efficient
  • Fire rated
  • Breathable
  • Mould resistant
  • Extremely Strong

Here's what some of our customers are saying:

"All of our designs are bespoke and we try to select the best suited construction and materials for each individual project. Working with Sips Eco Panels design department we are able to optimise the designs to use the materials to their greatest advantage. A building appears out of the ground in an incredibly short space of time.
Optimising construction is very important when considering budgets and the structurally insulated panel goes a long way towards this."
